The tool used for mowing grass above the lawn in the garden is called as a lawn mower. Based on the requirement and the importance, the lawn mowers are available in various types. The two basic varieties of lawn mowers include cylinder mowers and rotary mowers. 



The cylinder lawn mowers are created for an effective cleaning purpose and for maintaining a neat lawn at right intervals. These types of lawn mowers are generally utilized in places where the lawn must be maintained neatly such as the tennis court. Rotary mowers are useful for mowing large amount of rough grass. The size of the mower depends on the breadth of the grass that has to be cut. Few lawn mowers have the ability to cut till forty one cm of grass and others have the ability to cut till twenty eight cm etc. Depending on the width of the mower, the sweeps are also reduced to complete the entire work. The size of the mowers should be selected based on the area of the lawn where it is going to be used. The lawn mowers are operated by electrical power or petrol. The electrical lawn mowers are generally light weighted, cheap and very easy to operate.

The classical spark plug is absent in electric lawn mowers. They are not suitable for heavy lawn areas as it can get tangled in the grasses. They should not be used in wet areas also. They should not be used in large places because it can get over heated if used in a large area. Petrol mowers are suitable for using in a larger area as it is not operated by electrical power and do not get overheated easily. However, petrol lawn mowers are very costly and require a perfect maintenance. Lawn mowers operated by rechargeable batteries are also available in the market. These types of lawn mowers are useful; however it usually cuts only a small amount of grass than other types of lawn mowers. 



The lawn mowers move with the help of hover, wheels and rollers. Hovers are suitable for small spaces and cheaper than others. However, they have to be carried manually as they do not contain the wheels. They provide a perfect and neat finish to the gardens even they do not have the ability to cut very close to the ground. Hovers are not suitable for slopes and banks. The rollers are present in the cylinder mowers. They are helpful for ground leveling along with cutting the grass. The machines are usually made steady with the help of rollers thereby improving the efficiency of both grass and land leveling. Wheels are very useful in providing the proper mobility to the lawn mower equipments. 



Grass collection box is provided along with few lawn mowers and they are helpful for maintaining the mower space clean and tidy. After collecting the grass, they are filled in the box and emptied at regular intervals and utilized for more than once. If the lawn mowers are not provided with a tray for collection, then the mowed grass is left in the soil itself to become dry and serve as manure for the next growing grass. 



Power mowers should not be utilized by the people who walk very slowly and heavy equipments are helpful for people who require support during mowing. The lawn mowers must be provided with an emergency stop button helpful for stopping the mowers immediately during emergency circumstances. 



Cordless lawn mowers are electric lawn mowers containing a rechargeable battery for receiving power for lawn mowing. Hence, these types of lawn mowers provide the portability of gas lawn mower and the benefits of an electric lawn mower. The cordless lawn mowers are more secure than other types of lawn mowers. Cordless lawn mowers do not occupy a large space and hence they are suitable for small sheds and small garages. Also, they are usually light weighted offering a good mobility. Cordless lawn mower makes less noise than a gas lawn mower. 



While purchasing the lawn mower, it is very important to analyze its weight, important features, starting ability, mobility, method of disposing the clips, price and power. While buying a lawn mower for small garden, it is advisable to purchase a push reel mower. In large lawn having bluegrass and fescue which does not need to be cut lesser than two inches, rotary mowers powered through gas or electricity are more appropriate. Mulching mowers are suitable if clippings should not be dealt with. The clippings will be cut in a very small size by mulching mowers and hence they will disappear very easily in the lawn.

Large lawn containing Bermuda grasses or bent grasses which have to be cut lesser than two inches should use reel mowers powered by gas. In hilly yards and large lawn areas, a self propelled mower should be used. In extremely large sized lawn area, a riding lawn mower must be used for effective lawn mowing.
