All homeowners normally face certain questions when it comes to home renovation projects. The biggest one usually being, can I do this project myself, or am I going to need to hire a professional? This can be a tricky question to answer, but when it comes to painting your home, there are some simple steps you can follow that will make it much easier to decide if you should do it yourself, or hire someone to do the project for you.
Step 1: Determine the Scope of the Project.
Simple projects can be done by yourself, and possibly other family members helping. However, the more complicated the project, the less likely you are going to be able to do the project without hiring professionals.
For example, outdoor exterior projects are very difficult and time consuming. They require major equipment, and are going to need to be done by professionals.
Inside projects are a little different. If you are painting the entire house, and you need the project done quickly, you should probably hire a professional. If you are only painting your bathroom, and you have a little time to finish the project, well, that is something you can probably handle. The size of the project is probably the biggest factor in hiring someone, or doing it yourself.
Step 2: Determine the Cost
Think about how much a project is going to cost if you do it yourself, compared to hiring a company to do it for you. For example, painting your entire living room and kitchen is going to require you to purchase drop cloths, paint, rollers, brushes, tape, and possibly a ladder. Are you ever going to use these things again and are they worth purchasing? If a small project does not require purchasing all of those things, that might be one you can do yourself.
Professionals will already have those supplies, but they are going to charge you per hour they are painting. You also need to determine how valuable your time is. Painting a room can take a number of hours, if you can pay someone $20.00 an hour to paint, is that worth more or less than the numerical value you give your time. If you have to purchase all of those things listed above, plus you are losing valuable hours of your time, you can probably afford to pay someone to do it for you at a more economical cost.
Step 3: Determine the Risks
This is a very important step. You need to determine all of the risk factors involved in doing a project yourself. This is going to include how dangerous this project is. Exterior painting projects can often be dangerous, especially depending on how high you are painting. Those are probably better left to professionals.
Even indoor jobs can have risks. You need to make sure you will physically be able to handle the job. There is going to be a lot of lifting paint cans, climbing ladders, and straining muscles to reach tough spots. If you are healthy enough, and those do not seem to be very major risks, than you would be able to handle a project yourself. However, if those things can be a major issue, hire someone to do it yourself.
Step 4: Determine Your Skill Level
This is quite simple, are you going to be able to reach all of the tough corners and the hard to reach spots? If you are confident in your skills, and you do not thing this is going to be an issue, than you should have no problem. Do remember the worst thing you could do is ruin a nice carpet, wood furniture, or even accidently get paint on your wood trim because you overestimated your skills.
It is pretty simple, if you do the following things, determine how big your project is, determine the cost, determine the risks, and determine the skill level you possess, you will easily be able to decide if you can paint your own home project, or if you need to hire professionals.
