Older buildings and homes tend to have poor insulation, letting the air inside get too warm during the summer months and too cold during winter. Few things in life are less pleasant than having to sit all day in a blistering hot office. Portable fans and air conditioning units are a lifesaver. They are cheap and light weight, and can keep your room twenty degrees cooler. Some operate on battery power. Others plug into an electrical outlet.
It’s good to invest in portable AC units because they can be moved from room to room depending on your changing work environment, or to benefit a room full of people suffering from the heat. Sometimes, just a small fan to put on your desk can help tremendously, and oscillating fans cool the entire room. Your coworkers will appreciate it.
Sunbeam fans can be found at any Walmart or Home Depot in America. They are cheap and durable. They typically attach to a stand that sits on the floor, and they require little assembly. Some models come with remote controls, and most have three settings: low, medium, and high.
The large amounts of heat in some areas of the world are bad for people’s health, or even fatal. In these conditions, AC units are essential. If you have access to electricity, you will want one that you can plug in. Otherwise, you need to buy some rechargeable batteries, or purchase a unit with a charger. Even if you are working from home, the air in your home can become stuffy, stale or humid in no time without the proper ventilation. Get yourself a couple of house fans to move around when it gets too bad to bear.
Even having too many bright lights in a room, or a lot of electronic equipment running for many hours, such as a computer, can contribute to the amount of heat in a room. Other heat sources in your workplace may be heavy equipment, small rooms crowded with people, increasing body heat, or an open window by a coworker’s desk. Lots of people complain to their supervisors every day about how hot it is in their office during the summer months. Most companies will provide fans, or will allow you to bring in your own fan or AC unit as long as it runs reasonably quiet.
To make sure that you get years of use out of your portable fan or AC unit, clean it regularly, or whenever it appears to get dusty or clogged with dirt. Otherwise, the motor may slow down or eventually give out completely. When it’s time to get a new one, however, see what kind of warranty came with your original unit. You may be eligible for a discount or a free replacement. This is a good way to save money. Often enough, a store may choose to give you a new one free of charge with or without the warranty, depending on your circumstances. If there is a chance that the motor has overheated or the electrical unit has short circuited, turn it off or unplug it for at least fifteen minutes. This usually takes care of that problem. Sometimes the first thing to go on a portable fan is the oscillation feature. In other words, it won’t turn anymore to circulate the air in the entire room. It will just remain stationary. If you can live with this, it will not be a problem. Otherwise, it can sometimes be repaired. If it is a more serious problem such as the fan blades not turning, it’s probably time to get a new one.
With AC units, which are more complex, it all depends. Their are many components in an AC unit that can wear out over time. Just the same, see what you can get out of the warranty. If you can get a new replacement, great. If not, you might still be eligible for a discount or a free repair. Lots of people flock to the home and office section of stores each year looking for summer deals on new fans and air conditioners. It all depends on what you need for your home or working environment. Shop around and get the best quality you can for your money.
