Ovens are one of the most important appliances in your kitchen. Without them, you wouldn’t be able to bake or roast dishes. When buying a new oven, there are several gas and electric models to learn about. Once you know about the different types of ovens available to consumers, though, you will be able to make a purchase that suits your needs and budget.
Electric Ovens – Electric ovens are often the least expensive models for homeowners to buy. The prices, however, can vary significantly. Inexpensive electric ovens can cost as little as $400. High end models, however, can cost several thousand dollars. Electric models are also less expensive to operate, especially in areas with extremely high gas prices.
Despite their lower prices, most electric ovens suit the needs of average consumers. They heat up to specific temperatures and cook food evenly. They are useful for baking breads, roasting meats, and preparing other dishes such as casseroles and pies.
Advantages of Electric Ovens – Some people prefer electric ovens because they offer advantages that are difficult to find in gas powered models. For instance, electric ovens can maintain very low temperatures. This makes them useful for dehydrating foods and keeping dishes warm for prolonged periods of time without burning them. Some ovens have smoothtop surfaces that make cleaning up easy. Since the ranges are completely flat, you can just wipe off any spills that occur. Electric ovens can maintain even temperatures better than most gas powered models. Electric ovens are also easy to install. There aren’t any special pipes needed, so you just plug them in
Disadvantages of Electric Ovens – Some oven models have coil ranges that are difficult to keep clean. Even a small spill can cause big problems. If the food isn’t cleaned up properly, though, it can burn upon future use.
Electric ovens often take longer to heat up than gas models. When setting your oven temperature, you might have to wait several minutes before the appliance preheats. Normally this isn’t a huge inconvenience. In certain circumstances, though, the slow electric heat can cause frustration.

• GE

Gas ovens frequently cost a little more than electric models. Depending on your specific needs, though, you might find an affordable model that works well for you. Some of the top manufacturers of gas ovens include
• GE
• Maytag
• Premier
• Frigidaire
• Whirlpool
• LG
• Hotpoint
When choosing gas ovens, look for elements that provide a variety of cooking options. Gas ovens often include broilers, warming drawers, and storage spaces. Consider the different uses to help you purchase an option that suits your need best.
Advantages of Gas Ovens
Many people prefer gas ovens because they feel that flames give them better control while cooking. Depending on your level of experience, you could find that it is easier to judge temperature by the size of a flame on the gas stovetop rather than trusting a knob on an electric model.
Gas ovens heat up faster than electric models. If you hate waiting for the oven to preheat, then consider a gas option.
Disadvantages of Gas Ovens
Gas ovens frequently cost more than electric models.
You need a gas line to fuel the oven. If you don’t have a gas line in your kitchen, then you will probably want to choose an electric model. Remodeling your kitchen to install a gas line can cost quite a bit of money.
Unless you have experience working with these types of appliances, then you will also have to hire a professional to install the oven. Some stores include installation, but many charge extra for installing gas appliances. Some retail stores even refuse to install gas ovens and other gas appliances because they don’t want to accept the added responsibility.
Hybrid Gas and Electric Ovens
Hybrid ovens combine the best attributes of gas and electric models. These appliances cost significantly more than single fuel source appliances. If you want a hybrid model, then prepare yourself to spend well over $1000. According to Consumer Reports, most people shouldn’t both worrying about hybrid ovens. The extra expense simply doesn’t pay for the meager benefits. Those who are serious about cooking, though, might find that these models suit their needs better than other options.
Saving Money on Ovens
When buying ovens, it pays to shop around. Prices can vary significantly from store to store. In general, you will probably get the best price from a small, locally owned store. These retailers don’t usually have as many models for sale as big box stores, so they compete with lower prices.
You should also negotiate with your salesperson to get the best price. Buying an appliance is a lot like buying a car. Don’t be afraid to ask for free services and discounted prices. In the end, you can save hundreds of dollars.
